FUE stands for Follicular Unit Extraction. FUE hair transplantation technique has become the gold standard method of hair transplantation over the past 15 years. The FUE technique is based on the method of harvesting the grafts one by one in a randomised pattern. Therefore, there is no patchy appearance. And unlike the old method FUT, there is no incision scar. In the FUE method, the grafts in the donor area (the back of the head) are extracted with micro tips. Extraction of hair follicles is performed with a device called a micromotor.
Before each procedure, there is a face-to-face consultation. This consultation is for physical examination and to prepare the treatment plan together with the patient. After the consultation, the surgical team shaves the existing hairs and marks the borders of the area where the hairs will be extracted. This area is called the donor area. Before the extraction, the surgical team numbs the donor area with a local anaesthetic.
The hair follicles in the donor area are harvested with a micromotor. One graft in every three to four is harvested. Multiple grafts and high graft quality increase the success of the procedure. The actual FUE procedure takes approximately 1.5-2 hours. This time frame varies according to the number of grafts to be collected. Collected grafts are kept safe and viable in a special solution.
In the FUE extraction method the harvesting must be performed by an experienced operator. The merging of the harvested small areas can cause large gaps if the method is not followed correctly. Sometimes poorly done collection may lead to double and triple grafts being cut and separated. This is not good practice. The structure of each graft should be preserved and implanted, avoiding damage. High number of double and triple hair grafts gives a great advantage to achieve denser hair when harvesting is done correctly. And this all depends on the operator’s skill and experience.
In the FKS Clinic, FUE hair transplants have been performed for many years.
FUE is the technique used in the harvesting stage. It is followed by Sapphire or DHI pens during incision and implantation depending on the treatment plan.
